Chemotherapy is used as a replacement for any drug to treat any disease. But for most people, the word chemotherapy means drug to cure cancer treatment. It’s often shortened to “chemo”.
If a doctor recommended chemotherapy to treat your cancer, it’s important to understand the goals of treatment when making a treatment decision. If possible, chemo is used to cure cancer. The doctor may describe it as treatment with curative intent. If a cure is not possible, the goal may be to control the disease. Chemotherapy is used to shrink the tumor and stop cancer from growing and spreading. This helps the person with cancer feel better and live longer. Chemo can also be used to ease symptoms caused by cancer. This is called palliative chemotherapy or palliation.
Chemo may be used to shrink a tumor before surgery or radiation therapy. Chemo used as a replacement in this way is called neoadjuvant therapy.
